YouTube blows out seven candles, cuts birthday party short to log 72 hours of video per minute

YouTube blows out seven candles, cuts birthday party short to log 72 hours of video per minute

Ah, YouTube. It wasn't long ago that it was pumping out around 60 hours of content every 60 seconds, but nothing can stop the video juggernaut. Celebrating its seven years of existence with a video charting its rise, rise and rise, YouTube's official blog has also announced that it's now dealing with an eye-bleeding 72 hours of video every minute. We're still finding all this content as pervasive as ever though, with over 3 billion hours now watched every month. Catch the site blowing its own trumpet in the tribute vid right after the break -- which is all well and good, but where's the free game?

Samsung details Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for American carriers

Samsung details Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for American carriers

Samsung has published a list detailing which carrier variants of its phones and tablets will be blessed with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. While Sprint's Nexus S 4G is already enjoying the latest Android OS, the update will also arrive on the Now Network's Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. From Verizon, both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 will get the upgrade, accompanied by the WiFi variants of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Galaxy Tab 8.9.

On AT&T, ICS is confirmed for its Galaxy S II, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy Note, Captivate Glide, Nexus S and Galaxy Tab 8.9. T-Mobile customers, however, lack a similarly breathless list of upgradable hardware, instead Samsung says it will aim to upgrade "eligible devices" in the coming months and will "provide updates as we have additional details to share." Which all sounds like those updates aren't coming to Big Magenta any time soon. Samsung vows to update the list with more details as they arrive, which is available at the source below.

New Spotify for Android preview (hands-on)

New Spotify for Android preview (hands-on)

In case you hadn't heard, Spotify's finally given its Android app the update love it deserves. It's looking for feedback in the form of an app preview, available to download now -- if you're willing to install from "unknown sources". The update is a top-to-bottom refresh, bringing the sort of functions (lockscreen player?) we've been patiently waiting for, all wrapped up in Android's Holo theme. How does it all fare? Step beyond the break to see.

There's some fundamental changes that are instantly recognizable. Tapping play within the app didn't thrust us to the Now Playing window -- we remained exactly where we were within the app. While the Now Playing album art view still exists, we soon got used to the bar at the bottom telegraphing exactly what we were listening to. The whole navigation of the app is similarly cleaner and faster. Menu items have been corralled into a side menu similar to that found on the Android Facebook app, while playlists are now prioritized by offline play capability -- which eliminated another niggle of the old app. Downloading those offline playlists has also been given a boost even in this more precarious preview version. We found huge playlists zoomed onto our HTC One S through WiFi much faster than before, and the "extreme" option for audio quality already found on the iOS version has finally made its way to Android. Album and artist artwork have both been beefed up visually with high resolution pictures now populating the app, while we could now swipe through our own top artists and overall top-ranking albums on the main Spotify screen. Artist pages are eminently more navigable, as we were able to swipe between the overview, related artists and biography screens. It all results in an app that's looking a lot slicker and more modern.

Image

For us, it's the lockscreen player that's already our favorite addition. Previously a huge oversight, there's now no need to potter through a locked-down wallpaper and reload the Spotify app just to skip a track. The controls are simple; there's pause, forward and back track, but with a volume rocker on the hardware, that's largely all that's needed. On the sidelines, search and social functions have both been boosted -- whether we wanted to accidentally display all of our karaoke favorites to frosty indie friends or not. Tracks, albums and artists all pack a share button to connect with plenty of Android apps and social networks, while we could check on our friend's latest discoveries and compilations in an instant. Search results are now stratified by type and include album, artist and stand-alone tracks.

Image

We've been promised even more functionality before it officially arrives on Google Play, including Last.fm scrobbling -- crossing those musical streams like the desktop version -- but this is a great teaser of what we can expect. It solves plenty of the problems we've had with the existing Android version and, for a preview, the app was surprisingly stable. We suffered no crashes, unlike the existing version, which has died on us during syncing on more than one occasion. In fact, we had no problems at all during our testing over the last eight hours -- that is, aside from the lack of a widget. You can try it out at the source link below.

Cubify's 3D printer up for pre-order, wants to make you make trinkets

Cubify 3D Printer up for preorder, May 25th release date

3D systems trumpeted its forthcoming Cube printer back at CES, and it looks like its easy-on-the-eye curves are nearly ready for your earnest crafting. The good part is a lack of them. If you've assembled a more typical printer in the last ten years, you should be able to put these associated pieces together. It's a sharp contrast to plenty of 3D printers that more closely resemble an engineer's tantrum. The printer is priced up at $1,299, so it's not the cheapest, but we are promised a pretty concrete May 25th release date. Hit up the source to place your order, alongside some extra color cartridges. How would you make those turtleshell racers without some blue and red?

German court grants Motorola injunction against Windows 7 and Xbox 360

By Mat Smith posted May 2nd 2012 3:53AM

ImageMicrosoft and Motorola continue to duke it out in courts across the world, and it looks like the Google-owned manufacturer has just chalked up a victory in Europe. Based on a pair of patents involved the H.264 video codec, the Mannheim regional court ruled on four lawsuits between the two companies, granting an injunction against the continued distribution of Windows 7, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and the Xbox 360 in Germany. Microsoft has already upped sticks from the country to reduce the effect of its current legal predicament. FOSS Patents reports that Motorola won't be able to immediately enforce the ruling. The company is still being investigated by the EU over possible antitrust violations related to licensing its patents -- something that could further complicate today's ruling.

Sega urinal game 'Toylets' goes on sale to general public, sink companion still missing (video)

Sega Toylets urinal game

In an effort to reduce male patron's messiness (and grab some cash from locales not necessarily associated with gaming) Sega's Toylets can now be found in restrooms across Japan -- and even in a handful of cities overseas. You won't need to make the laborious trek to your nearest bar or arcade to beat the high score any more, however, as Sega's now put the urinal games terminal up for sale to (Japanese) Joe Public. A sensor at the base will detect pressure and, er, volume which acts as the controls. A screen at eye level will show your progress, and you can expect several short-but-sweet games in the style of Rhythm Tengoku or Warioware. It all comes a price though -- you'll need to stump up 140,000 yen (around $1750) for the device itself and 10,000 yen ($125) a piece for games. The porcelain is (unfortunately) not included.

T-Mobile Prism leaked: entry-level Huawei smartphone to launch in May

T-Mobile Prism leaked: entry-level Huawei smartphone to launch in May

While the design (and even the briefing slides) scream affordable, we're sure there must be some Big Magenta customers aching for a keenly-priced smartphone fix. So here's the Prism. Huawei's behind that T-Mobile face, cooking up a Android Gingerbread phone with a pretty weedy 600MHz processor and a 3.5-inch (480 x 320) touchscreen. A fixed-focus (yeah) 3.2-megapixel camera pokes out the back, while a microSD slot means you can extend space for those vaguely-almost-in-focus shots -- the Prism arrives with a 2GB card already onboard. The phone looks set for a May 6th release date and TmoNews has several more slides with some extra launch details -- you can check them out at the source below.
