Apple brags: sells 365 million iOS devices, 140 million iMessage users

Apple brags, sells 365 million iOS devices

Apple has never shied away from taking a few shots at Android during its WWDC keynotes, and why would 2012 be any different. Just before taking the wraps off iOS 6, Apple took some time to toss out a few numbers highlighting its spectacular sales and sizable user base. All told, by the end of March, the company had moved 365 million iOS devices, with the vast majority of them (80 percent) running iOS 5 -- a point they made sure to drive home with a graphic comparing the install base of Android 4.0. But, sales alone mean nothing without an active user community. Which is why Cupertino was so happy to report that 140 million iMessage users were sending more than one billion messages each day, for a grand total of 150 billion SMS and MMS missives. Push notifications have also clearly taken off in a big way, with 1.5 trillion having graced our notification screens.

Insert Coin: Sensordrone lets your smartphone monitor temperature, air quality, inebriation

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin Sensordrone lets your smartphone monitor temperature, air quality, blood pressure

Sensordrome is an attempt to pair a sensor-heavy dongle with your smartphone. The result is something slightly Star Trek, with the device connecting across Bluetooth to share a wealth of data on what's going on around you. Pledging over $149 to the Kickstarter project will net investors a spot on the first production run, while over $99 will land you a beta version for slightly zealous devs and testers. The sensor array includes some standard offerings like temperature and humidity but it also throws in a light sensor, non-contact IR thermometer and barometer. It can also analyze breath alcohol levels, and detect Carbon Monoxide and even gas leaks. Throw in an expansion connector to open up even more options, including medical equipment like blood pressure monitors, and you can see why it's piqued our interest.

Sensors aside, the gadget will hook-up with Android (other platforms will be considered in the future) and will be able to connect to the likes of Twitter and Facebook. Sensordrone can offer up its data in three different ways; call-respond mode will give you immediate read-outs, while streaming mode will send continuous data to your phone. Data logging mode will store the same data in its built-in memory which can be downloaded later as a .csv file -- and should mean graphs abound. Sensordrone's application software will also be open-source, allowing plenty more apps to utilize that sensor medley in the future. We'd still love a built-in radiation detector though. That aside, you can take a tour of Sensordrone's talents after the break. How can you say no to that face?

Previous project update: Motion-controlled sword-em-up Clang has just under a month left to go and has notched up just shy of $160,000 for the project -- all from under 3,100 backers. However, plenty of support is still needed to reach its heady $500,000 target.

Apple MagSafe vs. MagSafe 2: photos of the two incompatible power connectors

Apple MagSafe vs MagSafe 2 photos of the two incompatible power connectors

Apple quietly introduced a newer, slimmer, snazzier MagSafe connector here at WWDC, with the Retina display-equipped 15-inch MacBook Pro (yeah, the "next-generation" one) and the newly-unveiled MacBook Air machines utilizing it. Still, the original MagSafe is finding its way onto the refreshed MacBook Pro (both 13- and 15-inch), but we're guessing the original isn't long for this world. As with anything, change ain't easy -- for the two to talk to one another, you'll need an optional $10 adapter (which evidently ships gratis with the 27-inch Thunderbolt Display). It's also worth noting that the actual AC power plug returned to the "T-style" form factor, rather than the "side-style" seen in the MacBook units that were new... well, yesterday. We stacked a next-gen MBP atop a last-gen MBP just to showcase the differences; hit the gallery below if you're interested in such things.

Apple demos Passbook, a one-stop shop for tickets and boarding passes

Apple demos Passbook, a onestop shop for tickets and boarding passes

From airline and train boarding passes to concert tickets, we've seen a variety of tix make their way into the digital realm at venues around the world. With today's announcement of Passbook, the hard copy credential may soon be a thing of the past. Speaking on stage at Apple's WWDC keynote, VP of iOS Software Scott Forstall demonstrated the feature with United boarding passes, Fandango movie tickets and a Starbucks gift card. While none of these examples are making their premiere debut, Passbook will certainly make the QR-code-based stubs more user-friendly, while also increasing awareness among folks who continue to opt for paper while doubting the usability and authenticity of a digital counterpart. Passbook is also location aware, bringing up a Starbucks card as you approach a shop, for example. You can also get updates related to your stored credentials, such as a gate change announcement with a pending United boarding pass. The feature will come bundled with iOS 6, set to launch this fall.

Apple next-generation MacBook Pro (with Retina display) hands-on at WWDC 2012

Apple nextgeneration MacBook Pro with Retina display handson at WWDC 2012

Not satisfied looking at the latest and best Mac that Apple has ever made under glass? Neither were we, so we tracked one down, ripped it out of its box and stacked it up against the last-generation MacBook Pro 15-inch. How does it compare? Can it compare? Is the new MagSafe 2 connector going to mean you need all new adapters? And, just how amazing is that Retina display? You'll have to join us after the break to find out.

It's immediately apparent that this thing isn't the 15-inch MacBook Air that we've all been hoping for. But, then again, neither is it a traditional MacBook Pro. This is something that slots in between the two current devices and, we'd say, does so quite cleanly -- though honestly we can't imagine anyone wanting the O.G. Pro with an optical drive after touching this thing.

It's 0.71-inches thick, or roughly 25 percent thinner than the current generation Pros (which, by the way, live on -- except for the 17-incher). That's just .03-inches thicker than the 13-inch MacBook Air, but it feels like quite a bit more. Where the Air is tapered, this has a constant thickness throughout. So, again, it doesn't feel like an Air, but it's a big improvement over the Pro.

On the right side you have an SD card reader, full-size HDMI port and the first USB 3.0 port. (Which, by the way, is not blue -- Apple just made all the ports 3.0 and they're all naturally white.) On the other side is the other USB 3.0 port along with dual Thunderbolt ports, a headphone jack and the new MagSafe 2 connector.

Now, about that connector. Your old power adapters will not work with the new MacBook Pro and your new MacBook Pro adapter will not work with your old Macs. That's a little irritating but, hey, it's progress, folks, get with it -- or buy the $9.99 adapter that will let you use your old plugs with your new Macs.

And that display? It's gorgeous. If you've had the opportunity to compare the new iPad to the old iPad you'll know the kind of leap forward we're talking about here. It's that much better, but it isn't just resolution. Contrast seems greater and viewing angles too. We'll need more time to do a thorough analysis but we can say with confidence this display doesn't disappoint.

Neither does the rest of the machine. We have a lot of benchmarking to go and we can't wait to get to it, so we'll call this to a close and dig in with this, the next-generation MacBook Pro.

Toshiba's ApriPetit portable robotic interface solves household problems, melts your heart

Toshiba's ApriPetit portable robotic interface solves household problems, melts your heart

Remember ApriPoco? It's okay, we'll forgive you if not, but we can't say the same about a similar question asked about that fellow above here in a few years. With a heart and soul as warm as that found in Wall-E, Toshiba's newly-unveiled ApriPetit is around half as large as the aforesaid predecessor, standing just 5.9-inches tall and sporting a pair of eyes capable of staring straight through your being. It's described as a "portable robotic interface," able to understand and act on voice commands using a combination of speech recognition and text-to-speech software. The eyes themselves are said to double as "stereo cameras, which can find and recognize faces and determine how close they are." As of now, there doesn't seem to be any hard-and-fast plans for use, but it's clear that home health and service is an area of interest. Of course, we'd buy one just to converse with -- Malkovich has Siri; we'll take this cutey.

Vodafone's recharging truck returns for the 2012 festival season, wants to scan your hand

Vodafone's recharging truck returns for the 2012 festival season, wants to scan your hand

A new and improved version of Vodafone's massively mobile multiple handset recharger is being rolled out just in time for thousands of festival-goers to all hold up their phones to record the same Black Keys performance. The revamped truck still does that whole charging 2,000 phones at once thing, but adds DJ booths and new hand scanners to help phone owners more efficiently retrieve their gadgets, when it comes time to check into Foursquare -- you don't want someone else to become the mayor of the chillout tent, after all.

ViewSonic VCD22 22-inch Android Smart Display hands-on (video)

ViewSonic VCD22 22inch Android Smart Display handson

Call it what you will: a 22-inch Android tablet or an ARM-based desktop. Whatever nomenclature you prefer, this much is true: the Viewsonic VCD22 is an odd bird. Though it looks like just another all-in-one desktop, it packs a TI OMAP processor and runs Android 4.0, making it one of the largest mother-loving slates we've ever seen. With a starting price of $479, ViewSonic is hoping budget-minded families will snap it up, or maybe schools looking for a simple system to host interactive lessons for the kiddies. Is this ultimately a better option for classrooms than that new Chromebox we reviewed this week? We'll save that debate for another day but for now, we've got hands-on photos and video of this guy in action. Meet us past the break for a closer look.

Where else would we begin this hands-on but with that 22-inch display? The resolution is 1920 x 1080, which is about what you'd expect on a machine this size, and with a price this low. Though it doesn't have IPS to improve the viewing angles, we actually had no problem following along with an onscreen demonstration while standing a few feet away, and off to the side. That bodes well for schools that are thinking of installing these in classrooms.

Lying underneath that slim frame is an ARM processor -- not exactly what you'd expect to find inside an all-in-one desktop. That chip is part of TI's dual-core OMAP 4000 series, and it's helped by 1GB of RAM. As modest as those specs sound, they're plenty sufficient for powering Ice Cream Sandwich, so far as we can tell. The screen responded very smoothly to our various taps and swipes, and the machine was quick to launch and minimize apps.

From a software standpoint, that is Android 4.0, as we mentioned, though it's still not clear to what extent ViewSonic is going to customize the snot out of it. The demo unit we saw had lots of widgets peppering the home screen, including some tailored toward kids and families. Still, Android fans will appreciate that the core OS itself has remained unchanged; it's just more cluttered than your Nexus handset. A company rep also told us that ViewSonic plans on bundling the machine with educational apps such as audio story books, but that might well vary depending on whether the system is being sold to schools or individual consumers.

Zach Honig contributed to this report.

It also has two cameras – an 8-megapixel rear-facing zero shutter-lag camera with LED flash, 1080p video capture, intelligent camera features and facial recognition and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. New features designed to make the phone easier to use include:

It can be used to turn the volume up or down on the music player, answer or reject incoming calls, shut off or choose to snooze the alarm clock or take a picture by saying "smile" or "cheese."

Galaxy S III is "smart" enough to recognize the user is reading an e-book or browsing the web and maintains a bright display for easy viewing.

Galaxy S III also takes sharing to a new level by making it fast and easy to share pictures, videos and presentations between devices or with friends and groups of people.

S Beam expands on Android Beam™ to enhance device-to-device sharing through NFC technology by adding the ability to share photos, videos, documents and other DRM-free content to Android Beam. This allows a 1GB file to be shared within minutes and a 10MB file within seconds by simply touching another Galaxy S III phone.
AllShare® Play allows users to wirelessly connect Galaxy S III to their PC, tablet or television to immediately share files, stream music, user-generated videos, photos and other DRM-free content to AllShare-enabled devices using Wi-Fi®. It also allows the user to remotely access files on up to six Samsung devices.
AllShare Group Cast lets the user share a presentation or photo album in real time with multiple friends on the same Wi-Fi network.
Share Shot allows photos to be easily and simultaneously shared with a group of friends directly from the camera using device-to-device Wi-Fi Direct.

Samsung Galaxy S III customers enjoy an unlimited data experience with Sprint Everything Data plans. Sprint's Everything Data plan with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM includes unlimited web, texting and calling to and from any mobile in America while on the Sprint Network, starting at just $79.99 per month for smartphones – a savings of $40 per month versus Verizon's comparable plan with unlimited talk, text and 2GB web, or $10 per month savings versus Verizon's 450-minute plan with unlimited text and 2GB web (excludes taxes and surcharges).
